Things to see and do
- The ancient site of Glanum, one of the most important archaeological sites in France, reveals the remains of a Gallo-Roman city founded in the 2nd century BC. The Municipal Arch and the Mausoleum of the Julii, two exceptionally well-preserved Roman monuments nicknamed the Antiques, stand at the entrance to the listed site.
- The Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery, where Vincent van Gogh was interned from 1889 to 1890, is one of the most moving places in Provence. The painter produced over 150 works there including The Starry Night. The museum and reconstructed garden allow visitors to follow in the painter's footsteps in a preserved setting.
- The historic centre of Saint-Rémy, with its picturesque lanes, fountains, 17th-century mansions and the birthplace of Nostradamus, is a concentrate of Provençal charm. The Wednesday morning market, one of the finest in Provence, animates the town centre boulevards.
- The Alpilles, the limestone massif dominating Saint-Rémy, offer spectacular hiking trails with views over Les Baux-de-Provence, the Crau plains and the Camargue. The villages of Les Baux-de-Provence and Eygalières, listed among the most beautiful in France, are accessible in under 15 minutes.
- The Camargue, about fifty kilometres away, is a wild Rhône delta classified as a biosphere reserve, with its flamingos, white horses, bulls and expanses of reeds. The Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, heart of Gypsy culture, is its main gateway.
