World telecommunication and information society day

Date: 17/05/2026
All-day event

World telecommunication and information society day is celebrated every year on 17 May. This day was established in 1969 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized UN agency. It was later merged with world information society day to honor the complete digital transformation.

This day marks the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. What started with telegraph lines has grown into the global internet and telecommunication network we know today. For remote workers, this network is not just convenient, it is essential.

Without reliable internet connections, stable telecommunications and digital infrastructure, remote work would simply not be possible. This day reminds us how important access to information and communication technology is for economic development, social inclusion and individual opportunities.

Each year, world telecommunication and information society day has a specific theme determined by the ITU. Previous themes covered artificial intelligence, digital inclusion, cybersecurity and bridging the digital divide. These themes are directly relevant to everyone working remotely.

The day also focuses on challenges. Not everyone in the world has access to fast internet or modern telecommunications. This creates inequality in who can benefit from remote work opportunities. In developing countries, the digital divide remains a major problem.

For remote workers, this day is a moment to reflect on the technology that makes their way of working possible. From video conferencing tools to cloud computing, from VPN connections to collaboration platforms, we depend on complex digital infrastructure often taken for granted.

Companies and organizations use this day to draw attention to investments in telecommunications, increase cybersecurity awareness and advocate for universal internet access as a basic right.
