Things to see and do

  • The historic fountains of Pernes are the symbol of the town, with no fewer than 40 fountains scattered through the medieval lanes. The most famous is the Cormoran fountain, but every neighbourhood has its own, fed by the waters of the Nesque since the 17th century.
  • The Tour Ferrande, a 13th-century medieval tower, houses one of the oldest secular mural paintings in France. Its Gothic frescoes depicting Charles of Anjou and battle scenes are exceptionally well preserved and listed as a historic monument.
  • Mont Ventoux, just 30 km away, is one of the most iconic summits in Provence. This giant of Provence peaks at 1,912 metres and offers exceptional panoramas across the entire region, accessible by car or by bike for the more adventurous.
  • L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, 10 km away, is the world capital of antique dealers with its many galleries and antiques markets at weekends. The town is also crossed by the crystal-clear arms of the Sorgue river, ideal for a kayak or walking trip.
  • The Luberon, reachable from Pernes in under 30 minutes, is a regional natural park dotted with hilltop villages such as Gordes, Roussillon and Bonnieux. Its landscapes of lavender, ochre and Mediterranean forests make it one of the most photographed regions in France.
